GCU Research on persistent occupational segregation in Higher Education
GCU researchers past and present have published a report for the Equality Challenge Unit on “Occupational Segregation in Higher Education Institutions: disability, gender and race”. The project investigated current data and identified evidence of ongoing segregation within occupational groups. With a focus on the extent to which women and men are concentrated in particular job roles, and the disability and racial diversity evident within HEIs, the researchers explored current practice by HEIs and compliance with equalities legislation, and the experiences of staff in a range of professional support and campus services roles.
The report was commissioned and launched by the Equality Challenge Unit who aim to use it to support improvement in practice and performance on equality and diversity within the sector. The GCU Research team comprised Dr. Pauline Anderson, formerly a GCU Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Research in Lifelong Learning and now a Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Strathclyde, and Dr. Angela O’Hagan and Emily Thomson of GCU’s Women in Scotland’s Economy Research Centre.
