International Women’s Week
Public lecture at Glasgow Caledonian by Visiting Fulbright Scholar,
Professor Karen Beckwith
Wednesday 5 March 2014, 4pm. CCE6/7 CEE Building, GCU Main campus.
Professor Karen Beckwith is the Flora Stone Mather Professor of Political Science at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio). Her lecture “All Is Not Lost: The 1984-85 British Miners’ Strike and Mobilization after Defeat” will address questions arising in social movement and women’s activism by examining two coalfield communities and women’s activist experience in the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) strike against the National Coal Board in Britain in 1984-85. The research also compares remobilization efforts in the same communities in the NUM’s 1992-94 anti-pit closure campaign.
Professor Beckwith is a Fulbright-Scotland Visiting Professor for 2013-14 and is a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh.
