“GCU is the university for the common good and is a committed body of positive and impactful change for the UK population.”

3rd-year Human Nutrition and Dietetics student Kyle Kennedy discusses his time at the university so far, the opportunities offered to him and his future plans and goals.

Why you chose to study your course at GCU?

GCU is the university for the common good and is a committed body of positive and impactful change for the UK population, a value and commitment that I admire and reflect in my own career journey. GCU is also ranked number one in the UK for food science, and food science is very much interlinked with nutrition and dietetics.

Favourite thing about studying your course at GCU?

Every class is interesting and includes a new idea or new perspective on the topic of nutrition and dietetics. The faculty on the course also add value to each lesson by discussing their own experiences, which keeps me passionate and excited to be following this career.

What opportunities have been offered to you through studying your course at GCU?

With nutrition and dietetics, the faculty on the programme continually highlight opportunities with both the British Dietetics Association and the Nutrition Society. Additionally, there is the opportunity to be involved in the Dietetics Society (GCU) and all the activities they provide. GCU offers three main opportunities that I have found valuable: the common good award, the carbon literacy programme, and the leadership programme.

Has studying your course at GCU prepared you for working life?

Yes.

Favourite module studied and why?

Nutrition and Public Health. Foremost, I am incredibly passionate about public health, but it’s exciting to be a part of a course that values both the important clinical and medical aspects that affect the population at an individual level but also looks at the wider implications of disease and the wide array of factors that contribute to the total health of the population and how this has implications on our health system, economic situation, and overall general well-being and health as a country. This module also has a brilliant research element embedded within it, which has helped me maintain my interest in research.

What is your plan when you finish studying?

I plan to register as a dietitian and apply for a Masters in Public Health (MPH).

What is your 5-year plan?

Within the next 5 years, I’d like to practice dietetics and enjoy working as a dietitian. I also want to be involved in quality improvement (QI) and nutrition/dietetic research. I’ve also considered the idea of applying for a PhD after a Masters.
