“I am very grateful that I have had a chance to be a part of GCU.”

4th– year Pharmacology student Dominika Mejger discusses her time at the university so far, her favourite thing about life at the university and her future plans and goals.

Why you chose to study your course at GCU?

I chose to study my course at GCU because of the location of the campus, the colour and design (my favourite colour is blue), student feedback and friends who also decided to study there. I had a chance to attend open days for undergraduate courses and when I contacted the university directly about courses I was interested in, I received outstanding support and advice. I am very grateful that I have had a chance to be a part of GCU.

Favourite thing about studying your course at GCU?

Improvement of problem-solving skills. Easily accessible support and advice for students with learning difficulties. I felt that I mattered and was able to accomplish my study goals and graduate, become independent and being able to be a leader. Believing in myself and resulting in having amazing confidence for completing my studies and preparing for future job opportunities yet still having the passion for more knowledge and understanding. In fact, I often attended GCU despite not having classes because of the cafeteria and food on the ground floor which also motivates me to study more.

What opportunities have been offered to you through studying your course at GCU?

During the last year of my studies I was able to attend two different training courses of which one took 2 days at Merck and the other 5 days in Edinburgh at Napier University. My tutors did a fantastic job by sharing these opportunities which made it very simple to apply and at the same time focus on my studies.

Has studying your course at GCU prepared you for working life?

Yes, it definitely prepared me to be able to face new challenges and believe in self-confidence of acquired abilities. I received emails with drop in sessions for cv and cover letter trainings. I was able to sign up for a mentor program to help out with my future plans regarding either postgraduate studies or job opportunities where I will also be trained to prepare for possible job interviews or decide about continuing studies for a Master’s degree.

Favourite module studied and why?

Definitely the Project & Workshop module. This module taught me independence, leadership, the ability to work under pressure and be proud of my achievements. I enjoyed working with people from the bioscience department. It was also the first fully on campus module where I was able to work in a lab and see other students.

What is your plan when you finish studying?

My first plan after graduating is to invite all my family members and celebrate! After that, I will look for my first full-time job to gain more work experience in my field and make sure what type of job I’m very interested in. I have an option between lab based or behind the desk work which I am very excited to try out.

What is your 5-year plan?

As I mentioned I am planning on looking for a full-time job with my degree, preferably a scientist and then using my savings deciding when I would like to come back to do a Masters and then PhD.
