“The lecturers are great and are experienced in their field, I gained many practical skills to utilise in the workplace which has been so important.”

4th-year Multimedia Journalism student Sabrina Sigler discusses her time at the university so far, the opportunities offered to her and her future plans and goals.

Why you chose to study your course at GCU?

I left school at 16 and studied at college for 3 years before university. So, I had lots of time to decide what university to go to but chose GCU due to their journalism degree being very practical based and also one of the few or only that offered the NCTJ qualification.

Favourite thing about studying your course at GCU?

The lecturers are great and are experienced in their field, the amount of practical skills we learn for the workplace has been so important. With GCU overall, I have also really appreciated the support system as a student with a disability. I also was able to spend 6 months in Spain through the uni in third year which was so beneficial.

What opportunities have been offered to you through studying your course at GCU?

I have done work experience at The National and still currently do the morning bulletins for Quality Radio. Studying abroad as well as working towards the NCTJ qualification have all been amazing opportunities offered to me through my course.

Has studying your course at GCU prepared you for working life?

The practical nature of my course has definitely prepared me for working as a journalist in the real world. Through the Newsday’s module, each week we had a day which was like we were a real newsroom with individual roles and deadlines. Imitating what the workplace will be like has been really helpful.

Favourite module studied and why?

I have particular interest arts journalism so the arts and entertainment journalism module has been my favourite. I also loved Scotland, the media and national identity where I learned more about Scotland’s history in media.

What is your plan when you finish studying?

For the next year I hope to develop my skills further, especially in presenting and editing, and search for a full-time job around journalism in some way, even if it isn’t journalism itself as I know it is such a competitive industry.

What is your 5-year plan?

Ultimately, I would love to have a career in journalism and travel in my role. I would like to start off in print and progress to broadcast down the line. I have an interest in the role media has on underrepresented communities so would love to work in that area.
