This year’s Glasgow Science Festival’s Glasgow Connects is taking place between 1st and 30th September in a hybrid format, involving a wide range of live events held at a variety of venues across Glasgow and online “Science on the Sofa” activities.
The SHIP team has once again participated in this exciting event by delivering an approachable, family- and classroom-friendly, online session titled “How DOUGH they do it?”.
While the pandemic has emphasised the importance of protecting ourselves and others from harmful microorganisms, the SHIP team’s presentation aims to engage with the children, their families and schools to raise awareness, by ‘doughing’ science, that not all microorganisms are harmful and some can actually be really helpful to us.
Our online session offers children and adults an opportunity to learn, in a fun way, about the role of useful microorganisms by making bread and observing how yeast make the bread rise or by demonstrating the fermenting action of yeast by watching them inflate a balloon. We have also emphasised the importance of washing hands before and after preparing food, as always, using the correct 6-step handwashing technique!
Our team’s active involvement in delivering community and public engagement activities, once again contributed to the Glasgow Caledonian University’s commitment to provide the public with an access to research and teaching that can benefit communities for the common good.
