In June the SHIP team were involved in three events to help raise awareness of hand hygiene and antimicrobial resistance. This time we also had some nursing students help out too.
On Friday 15th June there was a Meet the Researcher day and then on the Saturday there was a Community Science Day. These were both at The Barn Youth Centre in the Gorbals -this was the perfect venue for public engagement work. The Friday event allowed networking between the community and university and then the Saturday brought research to the community with the hope of inspiring young people in particular to imagine the difference they could make to Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine (STEM) in the future.
The Sunday event was at Kelvingrove Art Galleries and Museum and was part of the Glasgow Science Festival 2018 ‘GSF Imagines at the Kelvingrove’
Nursing students and staff from the SHIP research group organised an interactive and creative learning experience for the public at both these events. The activities involved teaching the public about hand hygiene and antibiotic resistance with activities including teaching hand washing and using hand scanners, quizzes, sneeze runways and art activities.
Here is Lesley Price teaching some school children, and the First Minister, how to wash their hands properly. The second photo shows our community poster – a map of a local community where children were asked to draw “bugs” where they thought they might find them and where they could do something to help prevent the spread of infection.
