This October will see Glasgow Caledonian University take part in the UK wide Black History Month. During this month organisations across Britain will remember and celebrate important people and events in the history of the African diaspora. It has been running yearly in the UK since 1987 where it was first celebrated in London, but has now spread across the country with a huge range of fascinating events taking place. It is also celebrated annually in the United States and Canada but during the month of February.
There will be a two main events happening within the University, a seminar titled ‘Race, History and Brexit: Exploring the politics of erasure and documenting the experiences of Black and minority ethnic communities in Scotland post Brexit’ and the Archive and Special Collections own contribution with a showcase of original material from the Anti Apartheid Movement and bookable spaces in our reading room to watch a choice of documentaries about the global anti apartheid movement from the series ‘Have you heard from Johannesburg: seven stories of the global anti-apartheid movement’. Visits to the exhibition do not need to be reserved ahead; you would only need to book if you were interested in watching the documentaries.
We are located on the ground floor of the beautifully refurbished Saltire Centre at GCU and consequently are fully wheelchair accessible and conveniently located right by the café for a chance to enjoy a refreshment and contemplate the exhibition and documentaries either after or between your visits.
Coming to visit will not only give you a chance to view a fascinating selection of internationally important material, but will also help us celebrate the opening of our new reading room and archive center. The facilities available for visitors and archive staff alike are now second to none, with a bright, spacious and comfortable reading room and an expansive archive center, with electronic compact shelving, flexible working spaces, state of the art digitisation facilities and a secure exhibition space.
