Student Stories is Glasgow Caledonian University’s blog about student experiences at the University and how those experiences have contributed to their successes.
I studied at GCU because…
Having previously studied Graphic Design at GCU when I was considering returning to higher education as a mature student GCU was my obvious choice. The first class facilities, as well as passionate and supportive staff, made the decision so much easier for me as I wasn’t just reading about them I had experienced them first hand.
Time away from education has been the most important thing for me. I took time out to travel and it was the best thing I could have done. It gave me a totally new perspective on life and I regained focus of what I want to achieve.
What’s been your biggest lesson learned?
You get out of university what you put in. First time around I wouldn’t exactly say I was the best student, I didn’t get involved much in class discussions and was nervous about getting anything wrong. But coming back this time around I was determined to leave that attitude at the door – the worst thing that can happen is you are wrong and you learn from it. That’s what university is for!
Do you believe we are the University for the Common Good?
Most definitely, although it wasn’t one of the reasons I chose to study at GCU I think it is something that is embedded within the curriculum and will affect the choices I make when I go out into the world of work.
Who inspires you?
At cheesy and cliché as it may sound it is definitely my parents. My mum was a stay at home mum for a large part of my life and always supported me and allowed me to make my own mistakes but been there to help me to stay positive and see the lesson in everything I do. Whereas my dad owns his own business and has had to work away from home most of the time. He has taught me that you get out of life what you put in, to always work hard and treat others well. And together they have shown me that teamwork will get you much further than doing it solo.
Where are you going next and have your ambitions changed?
Next for me is Germany, I’m going to take part in a European Project Semester at Kiel University in Trimester B or 3rd year. Travelling has always been something I don’t think you can put a value on so to have the opportunity to do that within my studies at GCU is priceless in my opinion.
After that, who knows where I’ll end up after I’ve, hopefully, graduated.
If we bumped into you on campus, where are you most likely to be and why?
Probably in the canteen or one of the group study areas. I like to use my time between classes to catch up with my team for any group coursework whether that is actually doing work or just socialising.
