2024 Diagnostic Imaging graduate Derfhinn Bushell shares her insight into life at GCU and life after graduating from university.
I chose to study at GCU because…
Glasgow Caledonian University stood out to me for its leading radiography program in the UK, which was a big draw. Transitioning from a small town in Ireland, I was eager to experience the liveliness of city life, and Glasgow offered just that. The city’s variety of shops and restaurants along with the vibrant nightlife scene appealed to me as ideal place to balance socialising and relaxation with academia.
The most important aspect of my university experience has been…
One of the highlights of my university experience has been the people I’ve met along the way, from supportive classmates to amazing lecturers and healthcare professionals. At Glasgow Caledonian University, the opportunity to do placements in hospitals around Glasgow has been incredibly rewarding. Interacting with service users and witnessing the exceptional work of the NHS first has definitely been inspiring.
My biggest lesson learned so far is…
My biggest life lesson learned so far is how fast time goes, especially when witnessing patients facing terminal illnesses or end-of-life situations whilst on placements. It’s a stark reminder that life is too short to dwell on minor issues.
I’m proud to be part of the University for the Common Good because…
I’m proud to be part of the University for the Common Good because it’s all about making a real impact in people’s lives. As a former department rep for radiography and podiatry, I saw first-hand the positive changes this university brings about. From community projects to accessibility in education, it’s inspiring to see everyone dedicated to making a difference. Although I’m aware it’s across all of Scotland, the commitment to accessible higher education is truly commendable.
I get my inspiration from…
Oh, this is a tough one, but if I had to pinpoint where I get my inspiration from, it would undoubtedly be my nana. She’s 90 years old, yet her outlook on life is absolutely remarkable. Despite the challenges she’s faced, she maintains an unwaveringly positive attitude and an incredible work ethic. Back in her day, balancing a career as a nurse with raising a family wasn’t the norm, but she did it with grace and determination. What’s even more admirable is that she never complains and refuses to let age dictate her life. If I can be even half the person she is and have a successful medical career like hers, I would be delighted.
My next steps look like…
My next steps involve continuing to pursue diagnostic imaging and advancing in my career. I plan to further develop my skills and knowledge through practical experiences, professional development opportunities, and ongoing education.
You are most likely to bump into me…
You are most likely to bump into me either in the library, where I’ll practically be living for the next two weeks it’s 24/7 during exam season, so I guess that’s where you’ll find me, buried under a mountain of notes and caffeine!
