2023 DPsych Sport and Exercise Psychology graduate Dr Sanika Divekar shares her insight into life at GCU and life after graduating from university.
I chose to study at GCU because…
The distinguished faculty members, Dr. Paul McCarthy, Dr. Bryan McCann, and Elaine Duncan, played a crucial role in my decision. Their reputation and expertise in the field of sport and exercise psychology was a significant decision enabler. The specific curriculum and structure of the DPsych program at Glasgow Caledonian University aligned well with my academic and professional goals. The content of the course, the balance between theory and practical application, and the overall approach to teaching influenced my decision.
The most important aspect of my university experience has been…
Peer support was one of the most important aspect of my university experience and played a crucial role in my journey of pursuing a Doctorate in Psychology (DPsych). The DPsych journey can be mentally and emotionally challenging due to the rigorous nature of the program. Peers who share similar experiences provided me with emotional support during tough times, helped to alleviate stress, anxiety, and feelings of isolation. My peers understood the unique challenges and demands of the academic and clinical aspects of the journey. This shared understanding created a supportive community where we could relate to each other’s experiences, fostering a sense of camaraderie.
My biggest lesson learned so far is…
Completing a DPsych program was a significant accomplishment that often required resilience and perseverance. The journey presented challenges, setbacks, and moments of self-doubt. The ability to navigate these hurdles and persist in the face of adversity is a valuable life lesson I have learned.
I’m proud to be part of the University for the Common Good because…
I take pride in being part of an environment that values and celebrates differences, promoting a rich and varied learning experience. I also take pride in aligning myself with an institution that aims to instil a sense of ethics, integrity, and social responsibility.
I get my inspiration from…
I get my inspiration from human narratives. Exposure to varied human narratives enables me to step into the shoes of others, cultivating empathy and understanding. By immersing myself in stories from different backgrounds, cultures, and walks of life, I can develop a heightened sensitivity to the joys, struggles, and triumphs that characterise the human experience. Each human narrative is a unique lens through which the world is perceived. Being inspired by varied narratives allows me to expand my perspectives, challenging preconceptions and broadening my worldview. This expanded vision fosters open-mindedness and an appreciation for the richness that diversity brings to our collective story.
My next steps look like…
Having recently completed my Doctorate in Psychology at Glasgow Caledonian University, I am thrilled to announce that I will be returning to India. After a fulfilling and enriching academic experience at GCU, specialising in Sport and Exercise Psychology under the guidance of esteemed faculty members, I have realised a profound passion for applying my knowledge and skills within the Indian ecosystem. My aim is to contribute to the field of sport psychology in India, leveraging the insights and expertise gained during my doctoral studies. I am eager to immerse myself in the vibrant sports culture of India and work collaboratively with athletes, coaches, and sports organisations to enhance mental well-being, performance, and overall athletic success. The prospect of being part of the dynamic Indian sports landscape is both a personal and professional aspiration that I am enthusiastic about pursuing.
