2022 Pharmacology graduate Cara McCluskey shares her insight into life at GCU and life after graduating from university.
I chose to study at GCU because…
Having visited GCU for an open day while still in secondary school, I immediately felt a sense of community and welcoming as I walked around the campus. When applying for universities I was searching for a university which has a good reputation for my chosen subject, but is also known for their ethos throughout the student body – and GCU has provided exactly that.
The most important aspect of my university experience has been…
Every member of staff I encountered has gone above and beyond to ensure myself and my peers were receiving enough support and they often took the time to check in with us to see how we were coping, which was particularly appreciated during the switch to online classes during Covid.
My biggest lesson learned so far is…
That it’s okay to not do everything right first time. Looking back, I wish I had recognised sooner that it’s okay to not know the answer to every question first time, as we are students who are there to learn.
I’m proud to be part of the University for the Common Good because…
My time at GCU has allowed me to meet the most wonderful people who I know will remain as lifelong friends, as well as provided me with opportunities to grow as a person and gain experience which will benefit me in life post university. I was pushed out of my comfort zone and encouraged to try new things, such as through delivering oral presentations or working on practical skills, which has led to a significant improvement in my personal confidence and has contributed greatly to my academic performance.
I get my inspiration from…
I believe it is important to strive for equality in the workplace, with representation from all genders, ethnicities, sexualities and backgrounds and, as a young woman, I hope I can inspire other young women who are considering a career in STEM to continue to chase their dreams; regardless of who tells you that you can’t or shouldn’t – just like the strong women in my life did for me.
My next steps look like…
After a well-deserved break, I intend on moving into the world of pharmaceuticals where I aim to gain experience and make connections that will aid in creating an amazing start to a career which will hopefully last me a lifetime
You are most likely to bump into me…
Either on the 2nd floor of the library or in the gym.
