Professor Tahseen Jafry has been nominated for a prestigious award for her work in the justice and equity aspects of climate change.
The Director of the University’s Centre for Climate Justice has been shortlisted in the Diversity & Inclusion Award at Holyrood’s COP26 Green Giant Awards, to take place in Glasgow on November 6.
This award recognises an individual, team, group or network initiating and leading action to remove barriers and improve the working experience, engagement and representation levels of minority or marginalised groups in climate justice spaces, or demonstrating excellence in the delivery of services to minority or marginalised groups in climate justice spaces.
Under Professor Jafry’s leadership, the Centre for Climate Justice has pioneered projects across the global south, including helping to provide water for all in Malawi and introducing a safe alternative to kerosene-based lighting. The Centre also runs a unique MSc in Climate Justice, and has research projects and collaborations across sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
As a researcher and scholar, Professor Jafrey has spoken on the intersecting issues of climate change and human rights, and is due to speak at a virtual symposium on Human Rights and Climate Change hosted by the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) and the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, at the end of this month.
