While traditional models of e-learning can be uninspiring, asking professional learners to input answers to assessments, Google has opted for a self-paced, creative, interactive model using YouTube, Google Moderator, Google Forms, Spreadsheets, Email and more to encourage leadership and teamwork development.

Howden has agreed to acquire Thomassen Compression Systems BV to open up a much wider market for the company in the oil & gas and petrochemical industries. Howden said this acquisition represents a real boost for the Renfrew-headquartered multinational as it builds its compressor businesses worldwide and moves into new markets.

Bob Cleland, Chief Executive of Howden said “I am absolutely delighted with this acquisition which adds a major range of complementary products to our compressor portfolio. It increases our activities in the refining and petrochemical sectors, which have been underweight compared to our core market of power generation. It is part of our strategy to widen our range of products used in performance critical applications in key global infrastructure industries. This acquisition reinforces Howden’s position as a significant part of Scottish engineering, a sector which continues to play a leading role in the country’s economy”.

Howden and Glasgow Caledonian University have worked in partnership to develop Howden Academy, which was launched in July 2008. The Academy combines Howden’s specialist engineering skills and experience with the teaching expertise and worldclass learning facilities of Glasgow Caledonian University. Howden Academy helps the company to attract and retain the very best engineers. It provides new personnel with the fastest possible route to full productivity and allows them to quickly start making a genuine contribution to the company’s activities.

Under the over-arching theme of ‘Maximising the Contribution of HR in Difficult Times’, several free CPD events are planned for the coming months. Presented by HRM academics in the Department of Management in Caledonian Business School, the CPD events and are designed to offer practitioners key insights into contemporary HR practices and how they can be utilised in a turbulent operating environment.

The next event is “Growing your own: has the time ever been better for internal coaching?” on 25th November.

Coaching is increasingly recognised as an essential and critically important role that most managers need to develop and perform as an integral part of their everyday management practice (Hunt and Weintraub, 2002). This session aims to inform delegates about the contribution a coaching culture and practices can make to their organisation in terms of developing both the coach and the coachee. Analysis of this will go beyond basic employee development to consider the contribution of coaching to managing performance to meet organisational goals and strategies. The session will combine literary input with practical analysis, inviting delegates to participate via discussions and facilitated short exercises around organisational climate and culture for introducing and enhancing coaching.

Booking: To book a place on any of these sessions, please email HRMGroup-CPD@gcu.ac.uk

Upcoming Events:

“Leadership and Change: facing the future with confidence” Date: 23rd February 2011

“Maximising the potential of your people: the case for Talent Management” Date: 30th March 2011

GCU’s Strategic Business Development team – the Applied Knowledge Exchange - facilitated a bid with experts from the School of Health to access grant funding for the development of a training programme for physicians providing diabetic care in Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi.

Diabetic foot disease accounts for more than 50% of non traumatic limb amputations. Early detection of the disease may prevent amputation and the programme will provide clinicians with the necessary skills to identify diabetic foot disease at an early stage. The World Health Organisation (WHO) now classes diabetes in India as a pandemic, affecting approximately 50 million people.

GCU Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Pamela Gillies, is in India today (October 12) to sign an agreement with Dr. Sneh Bhargava, Medical Director of the Sitaram Bhartia Institute of Science and Research in New Delhi for delivery of the project, witnessed by Scotland’s First Minister, Alex Salmond, and Kapil Sabal, who is India’s Minister for Human Resource Development.

Similar partnerships have been forged with the MV Hospital for Diabetes and Diabetes Research in Chennai, Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre in Mumbai and Max Health Care, also in Delhi, to deliver the programme in other parts of the country.

The First Minister said, “I am delighted to join the Minister of Human Resource Development to welcome this important new partnership between Glasgow Caledonian University and Sitaram Bhartia, one of four partners involved in the programme. The Scottish Government is proud to support this project to share Scottish expertise to make a real difference to the quality of the lives of thousands of people in India.”

Glasgow Caledonian University Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Pamela Gillies, said, “Our partners in India are very important to us and we are very privileged indeed to be working with our esteemed Indian colleagues on this groundbreaking initiative to help prevent unnecessary suffering through diabetes related limb amputations. The support of the Scottish Government and Scottish Development International will allow us to share our podiatric expertise with doctors around India, building capacity in a sustainable way that will transform lives.”
