Hello everyone,
welcome to the Events in a Globalising World module! In this module we will be exploring the phenomnon of globalisation and its impact upon events at a local, national and international level. We will look at the economic, political, social and cultural ramifications of globalisation and the implications of this on your professional practice as managers within the global events industry.
As you will see from the menu on the right hand side of the screen, the first four weeks of lecture materials are ready and waiting for you. We recommend that you complete these on a weekly basis if possible and ask that you have completed the first four lectures by the time we see you at the first teaching weekend on 26th and 27th Feb. Each week we will pose a topic for discussion and would encourage you to make the most of this opportunity to explore these issues with both module staff and your fellow students. As you will see, we provide readings each week, in addition to these you may wish to purchase a copy of Manfred Steger’s (2009) Globalization (A Very Short Introduction) which can be purchased on Amazon for less than £5! This is a very short book which provides an excellent introduction to the topic of Globalisation.
The module will be taught by Jenny Flinn and Douglas Chalmers. As you will hear from the lectures, this module was previously taught by Douglas and Professor David Litteljohn – David has now retired so Jenny will be taking over from him.
If you have any questions about the module please feel free to post them here on the blog or email Jenny.Flinn@gcal.ac.uk or D.Chalmers@gcal.ac.uk.
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome a number of ‘new’ students onto the programme who will be joining us this semester. We have no doubt that everyone will make them feel welcome! By way of introduction perhaps everyone could leave a comment on this post to introduce themselves. Those of you who have already completed Semester A modules may even like to offer our new students some advice and tips!
We will, of course, be meeting for our case study weekend in only 4 weeks. This will provide an opportunity to discuss, clarify and embed learning in a more intensive and collective manner.
In the meantime, welcome to the module and we hope you enjoy the course.
