The purpose of this lecture is to provide students with an introduction to the purpose and uses of strategic management within the events sector.

Once you have downloaded the audio lecture and powerpoint slides you should complete the following readings in order to contextualise your learning:

(E) Dess, G.G. & Lumpkin, G. T. (2003) Strategic Management: creating competitive advantages.  New York: McGraw-Hill.  Chapter 1.

(E) Handy, C. (1995) Beyond Certainty: the changing world of organisations.  London: Hutchinson. Chapter 2.

(R) Goldblatt, J. (2002) Special Events.  New York: Wiley.

The extent to which strategic management is present within the events industry (in my opinion) very much depends upon which area and sector of the industry you are working in.  At times you will develop and deliver events in line with strategic visions while at other times you will be organising events ‘off the cuff’.  I am interested to know, first of all, if and how strategic management impacts upon what you do and secondly to find out whether you think it is important to management strategically within the events industry.  I look forward to hearing your thoughts!
