General Electric isn’t just about light bulbs. It’s the world’s fifth largest employer with a lot to offer graduates. It has roles across the degree disciplines and across the globe. The aviation company GE Caledonian is based in Prestwick. Recently, the Careers Service visited the company to talk about opportunities for our students and graduates. GE Caledonian wants to develop its relationship with GCU and the other West of Scotland universities. With a staff of 807, it’s growing its workforce. Its new internship scheme offers experience in engineering, as well as in HR, finance, IT and marketing, and the number of internships available is increasing. Internships are also a route into the graduate programme in Operational Management and Leadership. 

GE Caledonian has already started getting to know Glasgow Caledonian University. In November last year they took part in our online SEC fair. Sign-up to read their chats and profile. Watch out for future visits, here. We’ll invite them to discuss internships and graduate roles. Right now you can apply to the Production Planning Internship, a 12 month business placement. Suits are important. Listen to the interview advice at Prospects.ac.uk:

• Dress appropriately. It is important to look smart for your interview, but you also need to feel comfortable so that you can relax. Some companies have a much more relaxed approach to dress than others, but unless you are specifically told to dress informally, you should wear a suit or equivalent business wear.
• Decide what to wear well in advance – do not leave it until the morning of the interview. Make sure that it is clean, ironed and ready to wear.
• Make sure your shoes are clean.

The House of Commons is offering four placements in the academic year 2010/11 in the following areas:

• Parliamentary ICT (PICT) You’ll work in the Service Desk team, the Service Engineers team and the Telecoms team. You’ll work with specialists providing first line support to Members of Parliament. The placement lasts 48 weeks.
• Human Resources Management – Department of Resources You’ll work mainly in the Human Resources Management and Development Direcorate. You’ll have the opportunity to spend time with the Corporate Learning and Diversity team, the Trade Union Side and departmental HR sections. You may also undertake specific projects. The placement lasts 48 weeks.
• Building Services – Department of Facilities You’ll be based in the Principle Engineers and Projects team, working from the Palace of Westminster (House of Commons, House of Lords and ancillary buildings). Your team is responsible for the delivery of major projects , setting and monitoring engineering standards and providing engineering advice and guidance to the Parliamentary Works Services Directorate. This involves all aspects of electrical and mechanical installations. The placement lasts 48 weeks.
• Committee Support Services – Chamber and Committee Services You’ll help provide administrative support to the committees, including proof-reading and preparation of evidence, checking and distribution of documents and attending committee meetings. You’ll have opportunities to be involved with other aspects of committee inquiry, including fact checking, preparing briefing material and undertaking research. The placement lasts 40 weeks.

Placements commence between August and September 2010. Benefits include 18 days of paid leave and bank holidays, 10-12 study leave days, a wide range of learning and development opportunities, and a salary of 15,924 per annum.
