Congratulations to both Richard and Stephen, it’s great to see their hard work being recognised by professional bodies.

Dr McChlery attends the South African Accounting Association conference

Stuart McChlery attended the South African Accounting Association’s bi-annual conference in George from 27th to 29th June. During the conference he presented a paper “Corporate Compliance with non-mandatory statements of best practice: The case of Oil and Gas Reserve Quantum”. Constructive feedback received included useful input from Robert Garnett from the International Financial Reporting Standards Foundation. In addition to this a collaborative study has been initiated with Tasneem Joosub and Warren Maroon of  Wiwatersand University on reserve quantum reporting within the South African extractive industries.

GCU-Jinan links continued

Graeme Dalziel and Steven Walters returned this week from departmental trip to the University of Jinan (UoJ) where both of them enjoyed the experience and described it as “ intellectually stimulating and invigorating”. As part of the GCU collaboration agreement with the University of Jinan, China, the Finance Investment and Risk team spent the month of June teaching 2nd year undergraduates in Jinan the core module material from the GCU BA Finance Investment and Risk programme.  Graeme and Steven’s teaching visit was a continuation from Dr Patrick Ring and Mrs Jennifer Adams trip, previously posted.

Patrick Ring and Jennifer Adams introduced the students to the concepts of UK Financial Services Regulation and the UK Financial Services market. Programme Leader Graeme Dalziel and Steven Walters concluded with the teaching of Corporate Finance.  Graeme Dalziel says “ this visit was intellectually stimulating and envigorating. Our approach was to give the class of 120 an insight into how we teach Corporate Finance in  Glasgow and to help them bridge the gap between academic theory and the issues in the real world of Corporate Finance outside China. For those more interested in the subjects and perhaps with the motivation of studying further in Glasgow we held seminars which involved them role playing and engaging in group discussions.” We expect some of the Chinese students to come to Glasgow to complete their degrees.

Visiting Professor in North West University

Stuart McChlery visited North West University in June 2011 in his role as visiting professor. The visit included presentations to staff within accounting sciences on research methods. In addition  to this staff and masters students discussed their research on a one to one basis. A highlight of the visit was a visit to a platinum company after which it is hoped there will be some collaborative work undertaken regarding the collection and reporting of reserve quantum information within a mining entity. It is also hoped that there will be collaborative research work undertaken between NWU and GCU regarding a number of areas including accounting education with a study being envisaged of a comparison of the two institution’s accounting degrees.

GCU-Jinan links Enhanced

Dr Patrick Ring and Mrs Jennifer Adams recently visited the University of Jinan (UoJ) in Shandong Province, China, as part of GCU’s ongoing links with UoJ.  They were teaching elements of the BA Finance, Investment and Risk programme to UoJ students in their first and second years of finance and economic degrees in China.  It is hoped that some of these Chinese students will eventually come to study here in Glasgow.

Patrick commented: “This was an opportunity to provide Chinese students with exposure to lectures and seminars as experienced by GCU students. It was challenging and rewarding, both for the GCU staff and UoJ students.  We received lots of positive feedback from staff and students at UoJ, and were able to answer many questions that Chinese students had about GCU and about the student experience in Glasgow.  I am sure this will have helped develop the continuing links between Jinan and GCU.”
